Individual Therapy - My approach to individual work is varied, depending on the client's personality, needs, goals, and areas the parent or child see as important for change. My approach stems from training in systems, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and interpersonal psychotherapy. Please see Individual Therapy link in sidebar for common therapy goals.

Group Work for children ages 7 to 12 - Groups are conducted with 4 to 5 children of approximately the same age. The primary goals are to build social and relationship skills, and to improve understanding of how emotions, behavior, and consequences are connected.

Parent Support Groups - Oftentimes the most helpful support occurs between three or four parents struggling with similar issues. I facilitate a weekly parent support group where parents talk to each other about how to handle stressful situations. Parents also like to hear from me at times about which behaviors are developmentally appropriate, ideas for discipline and limit setting, or what particular diagnoses mean and how they are best accommodated at home or school.

Evaluations - It is sometimes difficult for parents to decide whether or not a child should be tested. The issues that bring people to consider having their children evaluated are often complex and can involve opinions of school personnel, children’s attitudes toward testing, parents’ concerns about what it means to take this step, and a weighing of costs and benefits. I am happy to speak to you about your child to help you decide if an evaluation is the best course of action.

Procedure:  I conduct thorough neuropsychological and educational evaluations for children and adolescents to help determine

  • strengths and weaknesses, and overall cognitive profile,    i.e. how
    a child learns best
  • recommendations for appropriate academic environment and
    necessary accommodations and support

Evaluations include interviews with current professionals involved in your child’s life, and review of all previous testing reports. In addition, I evaluate the following areas: intelligence, memory and learning, executive functioning/attention, academic skills, and social/emotional functioning.
